About High Pressure

The Yonge & St. Clair Tanning Spa has made it a priority to educate all new and current clients about the benefits of High Pressure Tanning Technology. In fact, we spent a significant amount of time preparing these questions and answers over the years. The objective is to educate and help our clients understand not only the primary differences between High Pressure and conventional tanning equipment, but also the numerous advantages in using a High Pressure Unit. We respectfully request that you read all of the material presented on this page to further educate yourself.

1. What is a High Pressure tanning system?

Firstly, It is a tanning system that is equipped with all High Pressure lamps which are approximately 3-4 inches in length, and behind special square UV filtered glass (usually dark in color or mirrored). With this specialized equipment, tanning is taken to its purest form. The burning rays (UVB) are dramatically reduced and the tanning rays (UVA) are tremendously optimized.  What does this mean? It means that, unlike “traditional” tube lamp systems, the burning rays are not there to chase you out before the tanning rays can do their job. Resulting in, a beautiful rich golden brown tan in JUST 3-4 visits. You will also only require 3-4 visits PER MONTH to maintain that tan.

The reason why? Because, the “burning” rays in traditional systems and in natural sunlight do the following:

  1. They will burn you if you get too much.
  2. And, even in small amounts that won’t burn you, it will dry out your skin increasing  the exfoliation process. Thus, taking away your tan.

In fact, do not be fooled by uneducated salons telling you they have a high pressure tanning equipment. More often than not, we have had clients come in telling us they have used a high pressure unit before. When in fact, they have not. Remember this, If the tanning equipment has long tube lamps anywhere in the unit, it is NOT High Pressure. Stop being lied to. The Yonge & St. Clair Tanning Spa has been specializing in High Pressure Tanning for more than a decade. Lastly, our objective is to educate clients not only on what High Pressure is but also the benefit this technology has.

2. Are you sure I won’t burn?

Have no fear. In fact, the beautiful thing about a High Pressure Tanning System, is that the “burning rays” are at the barest minimum and the “tanning rays” are tremendously optimized. What does that mean? Simply put, it means that your odds of overexposure are very low. However, we still may reduce exposure time for you if you are extremely fair skinned or have not tanned in a  while. After all, we do still recommend you to ease into it. Remember, to also gradually expose parts of the body not normally exposed to sunlight. These parts of the body tend to be more sensitive to UV light. It’s all about Tanning Smart. The Smart Tan Way.

3. Why does my tan last much longer?

First off, the reason why your tan lasts much longer in a High Pressure System is because unlike natural sunlight, traditional tube lamp tanning beds, or stand ups, it does not DRY OUT the skin or INCREASE the exfoliation process. As a result, your skin’s natural 28-day exfoliation cycle will remain preserved. Moreover, all other types of traditional tanning whether it is indoors or outdoors, even in small amounts that will not burn can dry up your skin. Resulting, in a disruption of your skins’ normal 28 day exfoliation cycle (resulting in more frequent exfoliation). This increased exfoliation will take your tan with it, requiring you to come in for many more visits to build your tan back up.

In fact, these additional visits would end up being 3-4 times the sessions as opposed to using a High Pressure tanning bed to achieve similar results. Furthermore, add the extra lotion usage, your transportation costs,  and not to mention your time all to achieve similar results from what a High Pressure Unit can give you in as little as 3-4 visits. Lastly, as an additional bonus your skin will never seem dry, or tight, but rather soft and silky. We encourage you to come in and experience it for yourself.

4. Why does my tan develop quicker in a High Pressure Tanning System?

This is a Great question. Firstly, Lets know the difference between UVA and UVB. UVA is the primary Tanning Ray while UVB is the burning ray. Secondly, Your skin is capable of absorbing a lot of the “primary tanning rays”. By that we mean UVA. The problem with traditional tanning beds is that the level of “burning rays”(UVB) is much greater. So the burning rays chase you out of the bed or booth before the tanning rays can do their job. In our High Pressure Tanning System, the burning rays are significantly lower, and the tanning rays are optimized 3-4 times more than what is found in most traditional equipment. Thus resulting in a deep golden brown tan in just 3-4 visits.

5. If these beds are so great, why aren’t they everywhere?

Once again, this is a Great question. Many factors can contribute whether or not a salon owner choses to offer this type of technology. In fact, these units are not cheap. They are a high-end investment that can cost about $88,000 plus per room. Having been in the business for 25 Years, we feel that very few salon owners have been able to keep up with the trends. Let alone, provide their clients with this level of quality, or they just don’t believe you want the best.

We here at The Yonge & St. Clair Tanning Spa, have been setting a new standard for customer service and excellence since 1997. In fact, we pride ourselves on having purchased all our equipment BRAND NEW.  Something most others in the industry can not say.
